English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
One of the biggest needs for internationals is to learn the English language. In the Roanoke Valley there are different ways to learn English as a Speaker of Other Languages (ESOL): adult education classes through the city or county, classes in area churches, and individual tutoring. Children are enrolled in English Language Learner (ELL) classes in their local schools and learn very quickly but often need assistance with homework as their parents don’t yet know enough English to help them.
Restoring Hope Roanoke has begun to connect with ESOL teachers throughout the area, assembled a variety of resources for teachers, and begun to build a network for sharing of ideas and encouragement as well as training. Many of these resources are shared through a monthly newsletter.
