English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

One of the biggest needs for internationals is to learn the English language. Thousands of adults in the Roanoke region reported that they speak English less than “very well” in the last released census data (2019). Church-based ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) programs are an effective way to support immigrants in English learning, build relationships, and share the hope of Christ. In addition, these programs offer support that public programs often cannot, such as free childcare and even transportation.

What we do: ESOL programs
Network: we connect volunteers for encouragement and support and direct new volunteers to church programs. Icon of three people in bubbles with lines connecting them.
Train: we offer a certificate course and advertise related trainings that may be useful to teachers. Icon of person holding a book in front of three other figures.
Consult: We meet with pastors, church leaders, and interested believers to set up and maintain programs. Icon showing two people facing each other in a booth with one with an open mouth and speech bubble above.
Compile resources: We send a monthly newsletter and maintain both a physical and a virtual resource library. Icon of several upright books as on a library shelf.
